The Captain’s Railing – Rockport, Maine

Custom forged and fabricated by Maine-based sculptor and blacksmith Joshua Goss, this railing was created for a historic captain’s house overlooking Rockport, Maine. The design combines substantial steel framing with individually hot-forged balusters featuring drawn-out tapers, elongated twists, and subtle hammer-textured surfaces.

A hand-forged lamb’s tongue forms the graceful handrail termination, while hot-bent components and visible riveted fasteners reinforce its traditional character. Precise cutting, drilling, welding, and fabrication bring the elements together in a sculptural railing that feels both contemporary and rooted in Maine’s coastal architectural history.
